{ A few tricks to manage treats, mornings and messy meals... }

{ Daily Dose of ME }

Happy Halloween! Samme woke up this morning and decided she wanted to be a MERMAID for Halloween!?@!?! Well, since it was 6:09am and she needed to be at school for her halloween breakfast thingy in 2 hours (oh and the fact that I can't sew!) it wasn't leaving a lot to be rectified. Fortunately, I had a little surprise for her to go with her previously decided upon princess costume that left her happy as can be! Here are a few tricks to manage the treat onslaught & corresponding sugar high tonight.

{ Closet reMODel... }

So, this is what I did on Sunday - I emptied all of the junk out of the closet in the playroom, took off the doors, moved her play kitchen inside it; set up her tea party table nearby (seh set up the dolls), moved in books for the shelf (on the left - can't see in picture); a "desk and phone", and a comfy cushion...and voila...a mini-ME house for Samme. She digs it.

{ Monday Madness.... }

{Daily Dose of ME}

Wow...I feel like I have been up and working for days not just hours...Today started with rushing Samme off to school before an 8:30am press proof at my printers; then onto 2 conference calls with some potential sales directors and reps (any of you want a JOB?!?!); then working with Will to figure out tradeshows/travel for the winter (I hate going to tradeshows but I am thinking I need to for LobotoME to get the products out there more...); called a very nice woman in New Hampshire that has an antique hospital gurney for sale that I desperately WANT/NEED for my tradeshow booths and my office trying to convince her to disassemble it and mail it to me; went to the store and bought a fresh free range turkey (long story but we are doing thanksgiving dinner tonight with my folks); did 2 loads of laundry; shipped some orders; called my doctors office; sent out a Gravity Play press release; contacted the POP display people who NEvER return my calls; followed up on some wholesale accounts. It is 3:00 and I was going to go for a run before picking Sam up at school and taking her to swim lessons before the turkey dinner but I am SO TIRED.

Daily Dose of ME:

Had a great day with the fam - Got a lot of little projects down around the house and a big project (I turned a closet in Sam's playroom into a little "house" for her...took off the doors, moved in her play kitchen, etc. It is adorbable..I will post pictures tomorrow). GO ROCKIES!!

Daily Dose of Fun:

Thinking of getting this book for moi - D.I.Y. Kids. (I figure if it features craft ideas that a 7 year old can do, I might be able to tackle some of them too!) Like these felt birdies -candidates for my first ever sewing project...

Daily Dose of Sanity:

Relax - Spend a few moments this evening disengaging from the busyness of the weekend by sitting quietly with your eyes closed for 5 minutes while you breathe slowly and deeply.

{ do you know the muffin crayon? }

Daily Dose of Fun:
A fun art project we did today from
Scribble Art: Independent Creative Art Experiences for Children. We were starting to accumulate a large amount of broken crayons around here and remaking them into muffin shaped composite crayons seems like a fun way of giving them a useful second life. Directions: Peel & put them in muffin tins as shown, preheat oven to 300 degrees. Pop them in for just a few minutes. Let cool. Pop out of muffin tips (a bit hard to clean, so I might try it with muffin liners next time).
Tips: Washable crayons don't work as well.

How to have a GREENer halloween...

Once upon a time, Halloween was all about bobbing for apples, carving pumpkings and telling scary ghost tories...Now it 's tuend into a multi-million pound monster. Here are some tips on how to enjoy a cleaner, greener Halloween.

1) Make costumes out of castoffs or raid local thrift stores. Here are some ideas from Cookie Magazine.

2) Buy pumpkins & organic apples from your local farmers market tomorrow. Find your nearest one at FarmersMarkets.net

3) Use soy candles in your pumpkins instead of regular ones (they produce 90 percent less soot).

4) Use ALL of your pumpkin. You can toast the vitamin-packed seeds for snacks, sprinkle in salads or feed birds. For recipe ideas click here.

5) After Halloween, recycle any waste and put your pumkin shell on the compost heap, or bury it in the garden to enrich your soil.

Sew (SO) Creative...

Just spent the past hour transfixed on a new book I bought, Midwest Modern by Amy Butler...First off you all should know that I don't know how to sew and may very well never learn...This book made me seriously consider hoping online and buying my first sewing machine EVER. The part of the book that I enjoyed the most is that she takes things from her surroundings - her gardens, the hummingbirds off her back deck, flea market finds and uses those as the basis of her creativity. Her home & office spaces are lovely and peaceful and her clothes that she designed look comfy and chic. Click here to learn more about her and here to buy the book.

30 days to a more organized YOU...

Check out these organization tips from the latest issue of Self Magazine.
I've been trying to tackel one project a day and put it on my planner under Household Tasks (eg. Sam's closet, pantry, fridge) and get everything organized and straightened up before the bustling holiday season.

61 days 'til Christmas...

So, I'm home today in bed sick as a dog...some sort of weird flu thing...my mother of course thinks I have hantavirus because she overhead Sam & I talking the other day about Ratatouille who lives in our kitchen...Anyway, I thought since I am incapacitated and don't have much brain power today, I'd start my holiday gift list.

We decided this year we are going to do LESS, which is hard for me because I am like a little kid at Christmas - I love the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I love giving (and I don't mind getting either), I love the lights, the Christmas trees and the MAGIC of the holidays. But, I don't love the credit card bills. Nor does my husband. And we want to teach our daughter the true meaning of Christmas. Plus, we really don't need any more "stuff." We are fortunate to have our health, a roof over our heads that is filled with people and things we love...we just don't need anything.

So, this year we have decided to do fewer, but more meaningful gifts...How, you ask? Well, we are going to give the grandparents a photobook of Sam's year. We are going to give our parents donations in their name to Oxfam, an organization helping reduce poverty around the world. For Sam, instead of lots of gifts, we are going to let her pick out one big gift and then fill her stocking with books and art supplies and homemade crafts. We will give our friends and work associates a bottle of organic wine with a cute Tag It gift tag. For Sam's friends we are going to make homemade playdough and give a favorite holiday book with a cute book plate in it. For her teachers, we are going to donate a tree in their name which will be planted in southern California (as they work to repair the damage from the ongoing fires) and a reusable coffee mug with a gift certificate to a local coffee shop (fair trade of course). My friends are getting lunch dates with me (TIME is a great gift); LobotoME pads and planners and a small gift from some of the fab Etsy artisians. My BFF is getting a necklace with her kids names on it. Our neighbors will get homemade bread to have for breakfast during the holiday season. And Will & I, instead of gifts for each other, are taking a family vacation to Mexico.
We are going to get a real tree for our front porch that we will then plant in our yard in the spring. We are going to replace all of our Christmas lights with LED energy effiecient lights. We are not going to send out holiday cards this year - I know big shocker - and I LOVE cards - but it is just too much...too much time, too much money and too many carbon emissions from mailing them. Each year we also adopt a local family through the Project Merry Christmas program and get them what they need (food, winter coats, gifts for their kids, etc).

So that's my plan and I'm sticking to it...I will have much more success at it if I avoid Target for the next 2 months. I hope I didn't freak any of you out talking about Christmas today when it isn't even Halloween yet. There are only 61 days left though. Now, I freaked you out, didn't I?
Here's hoping you all have a simple, peaceful holiday season.

Note: {Of course when I say "We" in the text above, that really means ME, or I...Since Will & I have been together I can't recall the last time he did any of the Christmas stuff...In fact, last year on our drive up to Boulder for Christmas with his mom (12 hours before the actual Christmas DAY) he asked me, "So, do I need to pick up a gift for my mom?!?! Like, I hadn't taken care of it already and hadn't taken care of it for the past 8 years! Men, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.}

Weekend Organizing...

Have had a great weekend so far and hope you all have too! We went to a FUNdraiser on Friday night for the local kids mountain biking program...one of the 16 year old riders directed a film about the program that rocked. Really cool to see young kids involved in such a great sport! Yesterday, went to the farmers market with my mom and Samme and brought home more pumpkins and yummy fall veggies and then spent the day outside hiking, doing yard work and making peanut butter birdseed pinecones with Sam. She ended up licking peanut butter and bird seed off her fingers and Barley (our dog) ended up eating the pinecones, peanut butter and birdseed. This morning after some yoga and a yummy breakfast together, I decided to sit down and organize all of the magazine tear out pages I have laying around. I used to save so many magazines for just one article, one recipe, etc. But now I just tear the pages out before passing the magazines along or recycling them. So I created a binder and seperated it out into 5 sections - Life (this is where inspiring articles, pictures, etc. go); Fun (this is where fun recipes, art projects, travel ideas, etc. go); Fitness (workout ideas; yoga sequences & articles, etc.); To Do (to order, make, research); and Home (decorating ideas; home organization ideas, etc.). Fall is a great time to get organized! Hope this idea helps get you organized! Off to watch a bit of the Giants game before going on a hike! And then tonight, clean up the house (least favorite part of the weekend) and then sit down and plan my week - ME Time; workout plans; meal planning & a grocery shopping list).

10 ways to avoid getting sick...

Ten simple ways to avoid getting sick from We The Change.

1. See a Chiropractor
2. Laugh hard
3. Scatter your workouts
4. Sleep at least seven hours a night
5. See an acupuncturist
6. Meditate
7. Perform cardiovascular exercise at least four times a week
8. Stretch
9. Eat organic food
10. Be wary of medications

How many of these do you do? I don't see a chiropractor or an acupuncturist and I try to get 7 hours of sleep a night but it doesn't always happen....7/10 isn't too bad, is it?

Halloween fun...

Today, Samme & I had a halloween craft day at home - we made about 3 dozen tissue ghosts; 2 halloween cards -she unfortunately lost interest before we got all of them made for all of the grandparents; a large ghost to hang from a tree outside but she has been carrying around her "ghosty" and calls it her "brother" (please, dear adoption agency, call us soon!); made yummy pumpkin/carrot/ginger/butternut squash muffins (but I frosted them with a bit of cream cheese frosting so she thinks they are cupcakes); put together new puzzles; did some other stamping projects; went for a walk and she is still NOT TIRED! ;-) How is this possible? And how do preschool teachers do it all day long?

Healthy Pumpkin/Carrot/Ginger/Butternut Squash Muffins Recipe:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a bowl, mix -
1 1/4 cups white whole wheat flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. pumpkin spice
In a mixing bowl beat - 1/4 cup canola oil and 1/2 cup organic sugar for a minute
Add 1 lg. organic egg and 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce. Beat 30 seconds on low speed.
Add flour mixture and 1/4 cup water; beat until moistened.
Stir in 1/2 cup shredded carrots and 1/2 cup butternut squash puree. Add 1/2 cup organic raisens (optional).
Spoon into lined muffin cups. Bake 20 minutes. Makes 16 medium size muffins.
To frost, beat 1/4 cup softened reduced fat cream cheese, 1/4 cup confectioners sugar, 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp. skim milk. Spread on cooled muffins.

WANTED: Longer Weekends

I have a shirt that says WANTED: Longer Weekends (and I wear it almost every Monday morning!) What is it about our 2 "free" days that become booked with activities and things to do? I feel like I try to squeeze in all of the excitement and fun and stuff to do in 48 hours that leaves me more exhausted than I was on Friday afternoon - Sushi dinner with friends on Friday night (YUM); farmers market and leaf picking on Saturday (Fun); 4 loads of laundry (NEVER-ENDING); making a bunch of darn purees from Deceptively Delicious (too darn time consuming); swimming play date and dinner with friends on Saturday night (more fun); power yoga on Sunday morning (excellent) followed by a quick trip to the grocery store; scenic drive to check out the fall colors (gorgeous); cleaning the house (UGH!); trying on Halloween costumes and taking pictures (hilarious); picking my mom up at the airport; Rockies game party (GO ROCKIES!); ordering Happy Halloween cards from Snapfish at 11pm last night; and more. There just really isn't enough time in the day is there? Here's to trying to slow down and savor the deliciousness of the fall weather this weekend.
OH MY GOD - I just heard my husband on the phone with his brother who asked, what did you guys do this weekend - Will, my hubby, responded "Not much. Just relaxed." DOES HE LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE AS ME!??!!

Green is Good...

The folks over at Blog Action Day have put together 50 simple tips on how YOU can help the environment.

Here are a few of them:

1. Turn off the TV for an hour. Reduce your energy consumption and get outside and play a sport. Or garden. Or just take a walk. You get healthy and enjoy the natural beauty of your surroundings.

2. Turn off the lights.If you leave a room, even for a little while, turn off the lights. You don’t need it, and it’s wasting energy.

3. Use a coffee mug instead of disposable. If you routinely use disposable cups at work or on the road, use a ceramic coffee cup or a travel mug, reducing the amount of trash you throw away.

4. Use CFC light bulbs. If your light bulb burns out, replace it with a Compact Flourescent bulb (those spiral-looking ones). They’re more expensive, but if you just replace them one at a time, it doesn’t cost much, and the energy savings is great. And as they last longer, over the long run, you’ll save money.

5. Don’t print at least once today. Instead of automatically hitting the “print” button, think of whether you really need a hardcopy of that document. Can you email it instead? File it on your computer instead of your file cabinet? Read it on the computer instead of on paper? You don’t have to eliminate printing entirely, but holding off on that “print” button once in awhile could greatly reduce your paper consumption.

Ten Thoughts on Whole Living...

From the Sept. issue of Body & Soul Magazine.

Loving acts begin at home, but the effects ripple infinitely outward.

Each transition is an opportunity to look at who you are and where you're headed.

Walk a little, every day.

Let go of what you don't need, you'll make space for what you want.

The desire for change shows up in your body as well as your thoughts. Pay attention to it.

Good food that serves you in the short term will sustain you in the long run.

A healthy life stems from better choices.

Help others because they need it, not because you need to provide it.

Giving is the key to a happier, healthier life.

Remember...

I received this wonderful Message by George Carlin in my inbox this morning....

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, butless time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much , and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quicktrips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, onenight stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give withyour heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

a better way to charge...

Spent over an hour in a bookstore this morning with Sam and discovered that my favorite book, Eat Pray Love is now on audio CD. I have read the book at least a dozen times and can't wait to listen to it in the car...I wonder what new things I will discover about it listening to someone else read it aloud. Sam chose this book. A bit of serendipity that I was re-connected to this book this morning because when I checked my email tonight, a friend had written that "I picked up Eat. Pray. Love and love it - I eat while reading it, and pray about a million times during it!"

So, after spending way to much money in this adorable bookstore in Moab, Utah today, I wanted to share with you two credit cards I use frequently...Cuz if you are going to charge something it might as well have some positive after-effects, right? Here are 2 CC's that I use and like.

Earth Rewards - A portion of each purchase will go to off-setting emissions. For example, spending $500 will offset 1,500 miles in the average car.

Fidelity Investment Rewards - Fidelity deposits 1.5% of your purchases into a Fidelity brokerage or retirement account.

ps - the cute bookstore I was in today...Arches Bookstore - their slogan is {brews, books & better living} - how perfect!

Fall renewal...

After a busy 6 months of producing 15 events and launching LobotoME, I need to get back on track with some ME to do's.

So this month I will:

1) RUN more.

2) YOGA everyday.

3) Clean out our closets and donate clothes, jackets, toys to those in need.

4) Get a head start on the holidays.

5) Spend lots of quality, mindful time with Sam.

6) Eat breakfast everyday. This is often one of the first things to go when I get busy.

7) Find time to just cuddle up on the couch with hot tea, a good book and the stack of magazines I haven't had time to read.

8) Schedule a long overdue girls night at my house.

9) Plan a weekend trip to Santa Fe to the spa.

10) Spend some time up in the mountains enjoying the beautiful fall colors.

11) Go see a movie - it's been awhile.

12) Date night with Will!

Situation in Burma...

I’m really saddened by what’s happening in Burma at the moment – please consider signing this international petition.

Read on ...

After decades of brutal dictatorship, the people of Burma are rising. In the past few days, hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters, led by Buddhist monks, have flooded the streets of Rangoon. But yesterday, the military started shooting monks and journalists.

This is a true emergency. Avaaz.org and MoveOn.org have launched a petition demanding Burmese generals negotiate rather than crush the demonstrators. They're focused on getting United Nations Security Council members--particularly China's Hu Jintao--to intervene. Thousands of people from all over the world are adding their names every hour -- will you sign? Click here.

please pass this on... Thanks Sarah for passing it along to me.
