{ love this planet }

Loving this bag available from Giggle Fish Gifts. It would make a perfect Valentine's Day gift for your partner, your children's teachers, your friends, etc. Buy it here (only $5.95).

World wide we consume nearly 1 million plastic bags per minute. Use re-usable bags...please.

{ Love your mornings! }

So, I've been TRYing to get up by 5:30-6:00 am at the latest (a good hour or so before the little one wakes so I have time to do some yoga, meditate, make a cup of tea, respond to emails, get centered...But this is NOT easy. Not for ME anyway. I'd much rather stay up to midnight working and sleep in until 8am. I need my beauty sleep.

So, to help get out of bed in the morning I really think I need this.
It goes off and rolls and bounces away from the bed so you have to get OUT of bed, hunt it down and turn it off...and by then you are out of bed which is 99.9% of the battle to begin with.

I had the tendency to save ME-time for evening, but by then I was too zonked to enjoy it. "Out of exhaustion, we tend to sit on the couch watching bad TV or surfing the internet, Jennifer Loudon, author of The Life Organizer says." To prioritize ME-time, she suggests "waking up early and asking yourself, 'What do I want to do for ME today? Stretch? Crack a new novel? Start a collage?' Then indulge before you even hit the shower. "

So, what do you say? Want to become a morning person with ME?

{ stop wishing & start doing }

Love Lululemon's Colorado ad....

"Wishing for knee deep snow, wishing for more time with the family, wishing for more trips to the mountains, wishing for more lululemon, wishing for more time to exercise and do yoga, wishing Meredith would finally figure things out with McDreamy, wishing for world peace, wishing to lose that last 10 lbs., wishing for.... STOP WISHING AND START DOING. Turn your wish list into your done list."

There is more to life than increasing its speed. - Ghandi

{ activity queen }

So, having had Sam at home with us for going on 8 days (due to a cold & snow storms) we've been doing a lot of arts & crafts projects to say the least and lots and lots of tea parties (more than the Queen of England). I thought I'd share a few of the Valentine's Day projects...

I made her up a little suitcase with a bunch of valentine's day card making supplies and we made Potato Heart Stamp cards.

Also, if you're bored today, check out Dwell's new line at Target.

{ another winter wonderland... }

We got 2 feet of snow last night (no joke)! The plow guy can't even plow the driveway because he keeps getting stuck (it is about 1/6 mile long so way to big to just shovel)...so we are stuck. So at breakfast while discussing all of the snow, Samme said, "Daddy needs to shovel the world today mama." How cute is that? And Will said, "Honey, I think I am going to hitchhike up to the ski area and go snowboarding since my truck is stuck in the driveway." Uh, okay Will. I didn't know 35 year olds hitchhiked, but you gotta do what you gotta do on a powder day!

{ success-FULL families }

Successful families don't just happen. They take time, thought and planning. This month, in addition to any personal resolutions you make, consider sitting down with your family to reflect on your collective accomplishments and dreams. Then set some family goals for the year ahead. Here are some tips on how to do this courtesy of Rob Stringer. Thanks Alli for passing this link along.

How to begin:

Schedule. Set aside a few hours over a series of nights, and gather together everyone in your home. Your teens will need notice, but tasty treats might help attendance.
Share the purpose. You will be discussing your wants, dreams and the values you hold important in your lives, then using them to develop goals to guide your family.
Reflect. Consider having each member choose and record one really important goal from each category: Health, Financial , Relationships , Career , Community, Spiritual, Intellectual
Discuss. Share your ideas. Be open and accepting. Some might need to a little coaxing to share, for fear of being ridiculed. However, if done in an atmosphere of mutual respect, this can be a great opportunity to really get to know your family! It can also give insight into people's frustrations & stressors, as you learn about the ideals they hold important in their lives.
Analyze. Are they feasible? Are they specific enough? Look for similarities. Do any overlap with others?
Write. Now collectively create a series of statements to both collapse and capture these common desires. These will become your family goals. For example:
We are a kind and loving family who is thankful for all that we have.
We value & support family and friends
We exercise regularly and lead healthy lives.
We share our time, talents and resources with others.
We invest in the future financially and spiritually.
We strive for excellence in education, and encourage life-long learning.
Celebrate. You now have a set of goals to help guide your family's decision-making. Everyone can now weigh choices against these statements to determine if they lead your family closer or further from your family's goals.
Post & review. Whether you frame your goals or carry copies in your wallets, take time each day, week, & month to reflect and review what you have accomplished. Are you making choices which support these goals? Don't worry if you slip. Even the most effective families can be off track most of the time! The trick that keeps them on target is their shared sense of focus and destination. They know where they are headed, and they keep coming back to it.
Thoughts to ponder:
Change is hard. Old habits are difficult to overcome. Be patient and supportive of one another.
Involve everyone. The process of family goal setting can help give family members a better sense of "voice". Telling your family what their goals are will not promote acceptance.
Take your time. Creating family goals should be a process, not a one day event
Make a plan and provide the focus needed to achieve your dreams & goals.

{ a president like my father }

I wanted to share this beautifully written op ed piece appearing in today's NY Times.

A President Like My Father

OVER the years, I’ve been deeply moved by the people who’ve told me they wished they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president. This sense is even more profound today. That is why I am supporting a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama.

My reasons are patriotic, political and personal, and the three are intertwined. All my life, people have told me that my father changed their lives, that they got involved in public service or politics because he asked them to. And the generation he inspired has passed that spirit on to its children. I meet young people who were born long after John F. Kennedy was president, yet who ask me how to live out his ideals.

Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals and imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible.

We have that kind of opportunity with Senator Obama. It isn’t that the other candidates are not experienced or knowledgeable. But this year, that may not be enough. We need a change in the leadership of this country — just as we did in 1960.

Most of us would prefer to base our voting decision on policy differences. However, the candidates’ goals are similar. They have all laid out detailed plans on everything from strengthening our middle class to investing in early childhood education. So qualities of leadership, character and judgment play a larger role than usual.

Senator Obama has demonstrated these qualities throughout his more than two decades of public service, not just in the United States Senate but in Illinois, where he helped turn around struggling communities, taught constitutional law and was an elected state official for eight years. And Senator Obama is showing the same qualities today. He has built a movement that is changing the face of politics in this country, and he has demonstrated a special gift for inspiring young people — known for a willingness to volunteer, but an aversion to politics — to become engaged in the political process.

I have spent the past five years working in the New York City public schools and have three teenage children of my own. There is a generation coming of age that is hopeful, hard-working, innovative and imaginative. But too many of them are also hopeless, defeated and disengaged. As parents, we have a responsibility to help our children to believe in themselves and in their power to shape their future. Senator Obama is inspiring my children, my parents’ grandchildren, with that sense of possibility.

Senator Obama is running a dignified and honest campaign. He has spoken eloquently about the role of faith in his life, and opened a window into his character in two compelling books. And when it comes to judgment, Barack Obama made the right call on the most important issue of our time by opposing the war in Iraq from the beginning.

I want a president who understands that his responsibility is to articulate a vision and encourage others to achieve it; who holds himself, and those around him, to the highest ethical standards; who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American Dream, and those around the world who still believe in the American ideal; and who can lift our spirits, and make us believe again that our country needs every one of us to get involved.

I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president — not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.

{ a little behind with LIFE ... }

{ what i am doing today = piles & piles of laundry }

{ what I would rather be doing today = reading }

So, Ms. Organization (ME) is not very organized at the moment. Little Samme was sick all week with a nasty cold and ear infection (that actually forced a 10pm visit to the emergency room on Thursday night) and has been pretty miserable despite our best efforts to cheer her up (eg. unlimited ice-cream & movies). Which of course has made me less than cheerful all week. So, after not getting ANYTHING done this week, I spent today doing 8 loads of laundry (no joke), cleaning the kitchen, picking up the playroom, cleaning the bathrooms, etc. I still have piles of stuff to go through in my inbox (both on my desk and on my computer) and clothes to put away. And check out my stack of "reading" materials bedside...haven't gotten around to reading in awhile. I am determined to get back on track come Monday morning with working out, knocking stuff off my to do list, practicing yoga, cooking healthy meals again and last but no least, smiling again. Reminder to self... Despite looming piles, my first priority = MOM. This means playing with her, taking her places, playing with my little ponies for hours if that is what she wants to do. Second priority = taking better care of ME. Exercise everyday. Do LOTS of yoga. Breathe.

Note: The ONLY organizational thing I accomplished this week was getting Stephanie's package off to her for the Organize Swap (sneak peek below).

{ learning to love you more... }

This idea is brilliant. I spent hours looking at it last night. There are 63 "assignments." Examples: #27. Take a picture of the sun. #39. Take a picture of your parents kissing. #50. Take a flash photo under your bed. #63. Make an Encouraging Banner. You can see the reports everyone has sent in. I love these social experiment-type projects! They now have a book you can buy too.

{ v-day }

So, I started to gear up for Valentine's Day...We are actually going to be in Breckenridge for a ski trip that week so I need to get some handmade cards ready before then and have something special planned to bring with me.

So, here's what I've come up with so far.

1) Cute card for Willy.

2) Breakfast with these heart shaped pancake molds.

3) Album for Will...the Greatest Love Story ever told kit. To record the story for us. So someday when I am 90 years old and can't recall the name of the band that was playing the night we met, I can look it up.

4) Loving all of the vintage valentine's day cards. Not sure what I am going to do with them yet for Sam. Some sort of mini-album.

{ celebrate the hope of peace, equality and freedom for all }

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Picture from Time Magazine

"Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant." - Martin Luther King Jr. (1964)

{ score }

I was dropping stuff off at the thrift store and couldn't resist going in...And as much as I hate Barbie, I knew Samme would love forever this Samme-size Princess doll ($6). It is like 3 feet tall. Also found fabric, tulle, a mini tea cup & plate for Samme and some vintage linens and ribbons. All for a $12.00. Score. Speaking of scoring, GO GIANTS! :)

{ read directions before not after }

So, you all know that I challenged myself to learn how to sew this year...I am signed up for a class next month but until then I thought I'd get out the old thread and needle and sew some fabric flowers to sew on some aprons I've been making and a dress for Sam (her request). Well, I looked over this tutorial & printed out the templates...that's where my reading stopped. I didn't criss cross the smaller flowers so my fabric flowers are a little flatter than hers. However, it was a fun project and Sam picked out the buttons and fabric. I cut out paper ones for her to glue buttons too while I sewed.

What are YOU going to CREATE this weekend?

{ Insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results.}

I've been loving reading everyone's resolutions that have been put out there and sent to ME. Thank you for sharing.

Two weeks into the new year is a good to time to pause and see how we are doing with them. Are there a few areas that need a jump-start? Do you keep doing the same thing over & over again but expecting different results (eg. not working out but expecting to get in shape?). Are there ones that you need to add to your list? Remember, now is the time to create the life you want.

Common themes this year include - spending less; being more mindful & present with our loved ones; creating more; and taking better care of ourselves. I'll keep posting tips on how we can all work towards achieving these notions.

Here are a few tips for each of those areas.

1) Spend less. Check out these smart grocery shopping tips.

2) Mindful Mama. This week try bringing your kids &/or partner breakfast in bed and snuggle with them.

3) Create more. Fall in love with something - anything. It doesn't matter what it is - just give yourself permission to do it. To get started, try writing in a journal for 5-10 minutes. Check out these sites for some great crafty ideas to do by yourself or with your kids.

4) ME-Time. In a jam-packed day, carving out even 5 minutes for yourself can seem challenging. Schedule the time into your planner. Seeing a notation on your calendar helps ement the idea that you should plan time to re-charge. Dedicate a spot. When you see your meditation cushion, cozy chair or yoga mat, you'll associate it with taking a break. Make it Fun. If it is something you look forward to, you'll be drawn to doing it day after day.
