{ happy birthday baby girl }

YOU are such an amazing little girl.
YOU are bright, funny & so darn clever (in fact you are so witty & smart and such a good negotiator already that we are super freaked out about how we will deal when you are 16 years old)!
YOU wake up each morning with a huge smile on your face and it is the only time of day when I can cuddle with you because the rest of the day you are too active to pin down.
YOU love to play outside and have tea parties.
YOU are daddy's little girl but you love to try on my shoes.
YOU are fearless and sweet.
YOU are bossy and sensitive.
YOU are the light of our lives.
YOU love bananas, avacado, kiwis, broccoli, cupcakes and scrambled eggs.
YOU are beautiful on the inside and the outside.
YOU make me a better person everyday that you are in my life.
We think YOU are perfect.
We wish YOU all the love, health & happiness this great big world has to offer.
We love YOU to the moon & back.
Happy 4th Birthday to YOU.

{ lights out }

Tomorrow, at 8 p.m., people all over the planet have pledged to switch off their lights for an hour in an effort to call attention to the issue of climate change. Earth Hour, March 29 from 8 - 9 p.m. local time, looks like it's going to be really big. So far tons of cities around the world are taking part, including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix and San Francisco in the U.S.

Sign up for Earth Hour by visiting Earth Hour to sign-up and join the movement with ME. We are going to lay out on the deck and look at the stars and tell stories by candlelight with Sam.

Turning the lights off for Earth Hour is a great first step, but if you really want to see a difference, then make Earth Hour part of your everyday life. Simple things like turning off appliances while not in use and switching your lights to energy efficient bulbs, will all help us reach our goal of reducing our annual emissions by 5%. Even something as simple as turning out lights when you’re not in a room and switching to cleaner sources of electricity like “green power”, make a big difference!

{ spring is here! }

Thank goodness! We were all starting to go a little stir crazy.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Note to self: take down Christmas wreath! :-)

{ ten thoughts on whole living }

Meditation forges a healing connection between mind & body.
Let your inner nature inform and inspire your fitness regime.
Saving the earth requires rethinking the way you live.
Nourish your skin as you would your body - with natural ingredients.
When you need help, ask for it. No one scores points for suffering along.
Learn to mother yourself.
When it comes to money, honor your strengths and acknowledge your limits.
Approach spring cleaning as a ritual, not a chore.
Find a new use for something old - or find it a new home.
Use tasks to guide, not restrict, you. Allow the future to unfold.

These are all wonderful thoughts on whole living...I encourage you to take one per week this spring and work on it. Schedule a massage, a yoga class or a girls night out (take care of yourself). Look at what you are good at with money (eg. giving to those in need) and identify ways to manage your money more closely aligned with all of your values. Try meditating for the first time or work on bringing the practice into your life on a more regular basis. Schedule your tasks & to do lists, but leave some room for spontaneity in your schedule each day. Plan a day or weekend for spring cleaning - turn on the music, open the windows, let fresh air in, buy some flowers for your kitchen & bedroom, and de-clutter by getting rid of stuff you don't need & giving it to someone who does.

{ saavy money }

Today I'm touching base with everyone about your new year's money/saving/getting debt free resolutions? How is everyone doing? I know that one of my biggest challenges in terms of saving more $ comes in not buying Sam things she doesn't need. I am trying to be a little less emotional about our purchases and wait a day or two to decide if we really need it or if I just want it. Check out these tips on 8 questions to ask before you buy something.

Here's a cool article about how to live on less and love it (it's more than a little extreme - the writer made $4,000 last year, but he gives good tips on ways to cut expenses).

I'm also really liking this site, Saavy Sugar for money management & investing tips. And this article might be useful to some of you who sell stuff on etsy or ebay.

Here's a new 30-day challenge to manage your money better via iVillage if you desire some daily tips.

And if you still need a kick in the butt to get your money matters under control check out this video here.

{ easter GOODies }

Sam's Easter basket ready for action.

A little easter/birthday homemade art kit on its way to a special little girl.

My lovely garden swap package from Catherine.

Almost ready for easter: still need to clean house to get ready for guests (been putting this OFF all day long, so know I am going to have to spend Friday night doing it - ugh); going to color easter eggs tomorrow with Sam and prepare food for easter brunch (and hopefully fit in a long yoga class in between the two). Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

{ disneyland here we come...lord help ME }

As some of you may recall I have ranted on this blog about Disney's "takeover" of our house and daughter...Sam is fascinated by everything princess, mermaid (we even own a movie called mermaidia), fairy, and gulp, even barbie. So when friends of ours mentioned they were taking their kids to Disneyland at the end of April for a long weekend, we smirked and said, have fun...we are going camping in Utah that weekend. But then I started thinking....that's what I want to do. That's what Will wants to do. But what would Sam choose if she had a choice about our travel plans? So, we decided to go for it. Booked tickets and a hotel last night and we are going to surprise her for her 4th birthday!! We aren't going to say anything other than we are going to sunny California. She doesn't know that a land exists full of real princesses and castles and games and sugar. But she will. And it will be worth every penny and our agony over Disney Corp. to see the look on her face when we arrive. Life is short and these ARE the moments to remember forever.

So I get tons of emails asking me how to start a business, how to produce a product, how to find a manufacturer, how to find a designer, how to find reps, etc. First of all, I am no expert. I was an environmental eduction major in college and used to run a nonprofit organization (notice the 'nonprofit' part of that statement). Secondly, I am getting bad at answering all of my emails due to my lack of time and the amount of them in my inbox. So I thought I'd post some information that I found helpful and hopefully you will too...

First read this book.
Then read this book.
Then do lots & lots & lots of research in your market.
Then head over to this site and check out their super helpful forums.
If you are looking for a graphic designer to design your logo, brand identity or website content I cannot more highly recommend Allison Lawhon/Bozeman Collaborative or Sarah Douglas/Gaia Creative or Amy Miller/Amy Miller Design Co. or Brett Miller (email me for his contact info). Make sure to see examples of work and ask about print/production assistance. All of the above designers have taken product to print or manufacturing (meaning they know what printing companies want in terms of design files, margins, how to upload to FTP sites, etc). Also be sure to check with them about their timelines. If they are slammed with other work, yours might have to wait. Or they might be able to get you some initial design ideas within a week. Some charge a flat rate others by the hour.
If you are looking for manufacturing assistance or marketing help you can hire a consultant such as Meg of Mixed Co. here.

{ something to train for }

So I don't like racing. I know that is funny coming from someone who puts on sporting events & races for a living. But I just don't have that competitive gene. I don't like to stress myself out about an upcoming event and my performance. But once a year I find myself signing up for one race for the pure reason of jump starting my training - kicking up my workouts a notch or in the case of the never ending winter, getting off the couch and back onto the bike. 3 years ago I went on a women's road biking retreat in California. 2 Years ago I did a triathlon with a friend. Last year I trained for the Nike Women's Marathon but ended up staying in Yosemite for an extra week instead! Sarah turned me onto this all woman's road ride in Colorado this summer (it actually starts in Niwot, goes to Lyons and back - 65 miles) - one of my favorite road rides from when we used to live there. Here's more info. I think this one might be the one for this year. I am dying to go to this yoga retreat in Montana but scheduling wise it doesn't work this year.
So, I challenge all of you to find something to train for this summer- whether it is your first 5K, a muddy buddy race, an adventure race or a sprint triathlon, hiking a mountain...sign up, schedule it, get some new workout gear, grab a friend and JUST DO IT.
ps - for mommy training tips check out Workout Mommy.

{ what I learn from YOU }

I am sharing with all of you some emails that I have received in the past week (with their permission of course) that have helped ME and I hope will help YOU as well. So thank all of YOU for sharing.

Living MY Values
...."I’ve learned these past couple of weeks that if I live my values, my life flows easily and when I don’t chaos and stress ensues. I’m back to health and fitness, family and THEN work….I’m making it happen with a plan…." - Jana
- This email from Jana reminded me of this very important concept...if we are truly living our values, our lives will flow smoothly and be aligned with the things that are most important to us. So take a few moments today to jot down your values and look to see if you are living them. If family is your #1 value but you are traveling all the time away from them for work, then perhaps you aren't really living that value. What can you do to change or adjust that. Thank you Jana.

Stepping Back & Reprioritizing MY Life...."Hello! I was thinking of you this morning because….Remember that list of books you posted a few weeks back? Well, I picked up Wonderful Ways to love a child. I love the quote inside by Jackie Onassis: “If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do matters very much.” Yes! I was thinking of that this morning as I’m in the process of reprioritizing my life, we only do what we make time for! I am inspired this weekend to get out my lobotome calendars and do just, make time for my children every single day. So, thank you my friend! And the story goes on, grin,… as I was leaving for work, I checked my e-mail and ran across the following article from MSNBC on Barack Obama’s mom…..it inspired me, and I thought I would pass it along to you as I know you are a supporter!" - J.W.
- This email reminded ME of how important it is when things get overwhelming to take a step back and ask myself, what am I doing?...what do I need to change in order for me to make time for what is most important to me? And to schedule TIME for those things each day whether it is exercising or fun time with the kids. J.W. - I'm glad your momME planner is helping.

Doing what I need to do and letting go of the guilt..."they are little things, but collectively they felt a little overwhelming--but have since found a place to work themselves out in the last few hours. so now, i'm taking a deep breath and hopefully cracking open a bottle of wine as soon as i get back from the grocery store. i did something i have never done before: ava woke up early from her nap this afternoon and i put her in front of sesame street. yikes. oh well." - M.M.
- This email reminded me how important wine is for sanity! :) But on a serious note, sometimes the BEST thing we can do for ourselves when things get overwhelming is to take a break - take a timeout. And if that means cracking open a bottle of heart healthy red wine or allowing your child to watch an educational television program for a little bit, then that is what YOU need to do. Without guilt...let the guilt go. M- I would say to you - I grew up watching seaseme street everyday and I turned out okay. So don't beat yourself up about it - instead congratulate yourself that Ava made it about 2 years further without tv then my daughter did! :)

Asking for HELP when I need it. "I am putting aside all sense of decorum, pride, and probably good taste by sending this email but sometimes it is necessary to simply ask for what we need. As some of you know I have been struggling with my health for the last year and a half. I was recently diagnosed with Lupus, finally putting an end to the mystery. I am working as a CNA and will not have health insurance for two more months. My medical bills and prescription costs, in addition to missed work time, have become financially overwhelming. I am sending this email to ask for your help...." - Kate
- Dear Kate, First of all I am so sorry about your diagnosis and I wish you much healing & strength. I know how hard it must have been for you to send that email out and ask for help. You are a strong, independent, wonderful woman and you did the RIGHT thing. Sometimes we all just need to ask for HELP. That is lesson #1 you bestowed upon me. #2 is that we NEED to help others who are in need - who are suffering or need a helping hand. And we all probably need to do this more than we already do. I will be sending you a check today. Take good care my friend and please don't hesitate to call if you need anything.

To all of my blog readers, a great quote to share...
"The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have a potential to turn a life around. It's overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt." - Leo Buscaglia

Stepping Back...This email came from my friend Julie...A great reminder that we need to instill our kids with the TOOLS to create a wonderful life but we can't do everything for them.
"When asked, "What's our job as a great parent or great teacher?" most people say something like, "To raise or help create really respectful and responsible kids." Our good friend and co-founder of Love and Logic, Foster W. Cline, M.D., disagrees. Dr. Cline argues:
It's not our job to raise responsible kids. Our job is to consistently do the things that give kids an opportunity to become responsible. When we spend all of our time and energy trying to make our kids respectful and responsible, we open ourselves up to major power-struggles. It's as if we send an unstated message such as, "All of my self-worth and happiness is tied up in how well you behave." This is far too much power for any child to have. Too often, strong-willed children use this power to punish their parents. In contrast, when we focus on doing the right things and giving our kids a great opportunity, we place appropriate responsibility on them and they have no battle to fight. The unstated message is much different: "While I want very much for you to have a happy and responsible life, I can't make that happen for you. You are the one who has to do most of the work."
- The messages in this... #1) Take care of yourself by remembering that the only thing you really have complete control over is yourself. #2) It is time to re-read my Love & Logic book again! Thanks Julie for passing this along!

{ easter JOY }

Isn't Easter usually in April? Seriously, doesn't it seem EARLY this year? Maybe its because there is still a ton of snow here, but I need to kick the Easter Brunch planning into high gear.

Here are a few easter basket ideas that don't involve sugar.

I'm thinking of filling a pink suitcase with the following for Sam...

Wooden Bird Whistles.

Filling the eggs with stuff from the Easter Inspiration Pack from Etsy seller Scissors Paper Glue.

Duck shaped crayons
also via Etsy.

Egg shaped chalk. To buy or make. I'm going with the buy option. :-)

In the meantime I am going to get stuff to make these and these.

and of course egg coloring using this tip and lots of rubber bands and then planning on eating lots of egg salad sandwiches.

{ CREATE }

Samme was busy creating yesterday...Made a bunch of spring colored chain rings out of scrap paper via. Crafting with Kids and made some easter cards. What are you going to create today?

And a funny side note...Today Samme said to me..."Mommy, you are a good mommy." I smiled and said "thank you sweetie." Then she said, "But Mommy, when I'm a bad girl you are a bad mommy." !!?!?!!?!?! Pretty darn funny and insightful don't you think... I guess I need to work on how mommy handles bad behavior...continuous self-improvement. :-)

{ save a little, save a lot }

I know a lot of your 2008 resolutions have to do with saving more $ for various reasons - to pay down debt, save $ for a family vacation, buy a house, etc.

Sometimes it’s less overwhelming to think about saving for things in different categories rather than one huge goal. For instance, savings can be looked at in the following way:

* Short-term goals: Purchases costing less than $1,000
* Medium-term goals: Purchases over $1,000, such as vacations, new furniture or even home ownership
* Long-term goals: Savings for retirement or a child’s college education

Take a look at your financial goals and seeing how they fit into each of these catagories and look at ways to set aside some money each month for all 3 categories.

We are trying to save for mostly mid-term goals (solar panels, paying off my school loans and a month in Australia) and long-term goals (early retirement). One of the ways we think we can reach many of our mid-term goals this year is by cutting down our monthly expenses on non-necessary purchases. If we can save an extra $500-1,000/month that will help us have more in the bank at the end of the year for our mid-term goals. We are also looking at ways to increase our revenue for our businesses and cut down on expenses - that also will allow us to have more money at the end of the year for our long-term goals.

ps - Speaking of money, I just found an adorable new wallet.
pps - I'm going to try and get Suze Orman's new book at the library this week.
ppps - A good article in US News about applying the principles of yoga & mindfulness to your spending via Hip Tranquil Chick.

{ organized recipes }

You might remember the great recipe binder that Stephanie gave me for the Let's Get Organized Swap...Here's a "how to" courtesy of Organize Magazine.

update: Great minds think alike, Steph posted about this same tutorial.

{ i'm it }

I've been tagged a bunch in the past few months and have never gotten around to doing it but I finally did it.

7 weird things that you don't know about ME....

1) I took tap dancing classes for 15 years and wanted to be a rockette. {note: i am barely 5'3"}
2) Although I am an impatient driver (I grew up in NY afterall) I HATE to pass people - and if I do pass someone I hold my breath the entire time.
3) I can't function if my house is a wreck and I can't leave the house if the bed isn't made.
4) My favorite movie of all time is goonies. I even let sam watch it last weekend.
5) I am severally directionally impaired - I get lost all the time and I lock my keys in my car at least once a week. Thank goodness for OnStar.
6) The first concert I ever saw was milli vanilli at the binghampton, ny arena.
7) I've had the same best friend for 29 years - we met in preschool and we are polar opposites. lisa is a republican, church-attending, attorney with long nails & long hair; and i am a liberal, hippie, sort of buddhist with no nails & short hair. but i love her to death. i'd love her even more if she voted for obama. :)

8 things that i am thankful for { in no particular order }

1) my parents for "born-ing" me {that's what I called being born when I was little}.
2) my patient, kind, hard-working husband.
3) my cancer...which brought us to our beautiful, funny daughter samme {i am so thankful to be her mom}.
4) sam's birthparents for chosing us and loving her.
5) barack obama's movement for change.
6) my family & friends {you all know who you are}
7) my health & my heart
8) cupcakes

so, I guess i'm supposed to tag a few of you...how about any of you who haven't been tagged. go for it. i know that's a bit lame to not NAME people...but its kind of like those emails that go around and say if you don't forward this to 8 of your friends right now you will experience 8 years of bad luck. silly.

{ good & happy days }

I get a lot of emails asking how I find the time & energy to work, travel so much and do fun crafts with Sam. First of all, I'd like to say, this blog makes me look better than I am :). Seriously. There are mornings when I have to touch base with a rep and Sam watches Noggin. Shoot me. There are days when I have NO energy to workout and no patience for a build your own birdhouse project with Sam and the best idea I can muster is to throw bird seed out the window to the birdies. There are weeks that go by without a single picture taken or journal entry noted. I will never have a record of Sam's life like this. I will never have a perfectly clean house like this. And I will never have a body that looks like this. But, I do try to remember each day, that we indeed 'Only Live Once' and to build some FUN and mindful time into everyday things ~ not just while on vacations or on the weekends.

I was inspired awhile ago by this post on Good + Happy Day (finally got around to finding it again) about planning something fun each day. It can just be a little, "today we'll paint" or "today we'll build a snowman" or "today we'll have pancakes for dinner." It doesn't take much to turn a mundane day into an awesome day for kids. So, this week's challenge is to take your momME or organizeME planner, and on the very bottom blank line - write FUN. And each day this week, plan a little something FUN. Be sure and read her general parenting philosophy too ~ it's great!

And remember... "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." - Annie Dillard
